Toyota Marks 25 Years of Manufacturing Autos in Canada

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces that Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC), TMC’s vehicle manufacturing subsidiary based in Canada, held a ceremony in Ontario on November 17 (local time) to mark 25 years of operations.

The ceremony was held at the Waterloo Region Museum with Minister of State for Science and Technology Gary Goodyear, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development and Innovation Brad Duguid, other government officials, business partners and TMC President Akio Toyoda in attendance. At the event, TMC President Akio Toyoda said that TMMC, which is dedicated to quality and innovation, has become one of Toyota’s largest manufacturing operations in the world thanks to outstanding support from business partners, Toyota team members and government. He went on to propose a toast to continued mutual success for Toyota and its partners in Canada.

TMMC also marked the anniversary by donating 10 “RAV4″ vehicles to local community groups.

Toyota Celebrates 25 Years In The Bluegrass

Hundreds gathered at Keeneland to celebrate a milestone. 25 years
ago, Toyota came to the Bluegrass, bringing thousands of jobs.

Since 1986 the Toyota Motor Engineering Manufacturing plant
in Georgetown has rolled out nearly nine-million cars.

Former Governor Martha Lane Collins led the efforts to bring
Toyota to the Bluegrass, making it the first major plant in the
US.

“We didn’t know exactly what was going to happen,” says Former
Governor Collins. “We were really, really ready to take on the
world.”

The plant now provides more than 7,000 jobs to the Lexington
area. But Toyota’s impact doesn’t stop there.

“We not only wanted to do business here, but be a part of the
community. It was important for us to find ways to give back.”

In 25 years, Toyota has donated more than 52 million dollars to
organizations across the state.

“We’ve also provided numerous venues for our team members to go
out into the field and work with our non-profits,” says Wil
James, President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky.

Toyota’s partnership with Kentucky remains strong for the future.

We’ve moved forward Kentucky and we’re still moving forward with
Toyota for another 25 years,” says Collins.

Nov 17 (Reuters) – The strong yen is forcing Toyota Motor
Corp and Nissan Motor Co Ltd to consider
changes in production plans and alliance strategies, the top
executives of both Japanese automakers said on Thursday.

The yen, which hit a record high against the U.S. dollar in
late October, has undercut profits for Nissan and Toyota, which
both build vehicles in Japan for overseas markets.

To offset the strong yen, Toyota may “deepen alliances”
with suppliers and dealers, President Akio Toyoda said during
the opening of a Toyota plant in Mississippi that will build
Corolla cars now being manufactured in Japan.

At a separate event in New York, Nissan Chief Executive
Carlos Ghosn said the strong yen may force Nissan and other
companies to shift production outside of Japan.

“What’s taking place now is many projects are now basing
their manufacturing outside of Japan because they just cannot
survive with this 77 yen to the dollar and they have absolutely
no visibility they’re going to get out of (this),” Ghosn said
in a speech at the Japan Society in New York.

So far this year, the dollar has fallen more than 5 percent
against the yen . Since 2007, the dollar has tumbled more
than 35 percent against the yen.

The yen’s strength has raised questions about the rationale
of Toyota’s commitment to producing at least 3 million cars in
Japan each year. By contrast, Nissan has been more willing to
shift production abroad.

“We need just one thing,” Ghosn told the Japan Society in
New York. “Fix the exchange rate. Fix it.”

The soaring yen makes it cheaper for Nissan and Toyota to
buy commodities and potentially buy overseas assets. But it
also diminishes earnings from major auto markets such as the
United States.

Rather than buy companies outright, Toyota is more likely
to enter partnerships similar to one it entered earlier this
year with Ford Motor Co to build hybrid trucks and SUVs
and develop phone, navigation and entertainment systems, Toyota
Motor Sales President Jim Lentz said.

That deal will allow Toyota to tackle an area of vehicle
technology where it has lagged.

“We are not good at acquiring companies. We are bad at
doing that,”

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Celebrates J.D. Power Platinum Plant Quality Award

Award signifies highest initial quality of any plant in the world

CAMBRIDGE, ON, Nov. 18, 2011 /CNW/ – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) celebrated its Platinum Plant Quality Award today at ceremonies in Cambridge, Ontario. TMMC’s Cambridge South Plant was recognized as the highest ranked plant in the world for initial quality in a tie with two other plants; one in the United States and the other in Japan . This year, 121 qualifying plants around the world were reviewed. This is TMMC’s first Platinum recognition.

Fin O’Neill, President, J.D. Power and Associates joined the award ceremony. During the presentation, Mr. O’Neill noted that, “The entire Cambridge facility, including both North and South lines, has received nine awards for manufacturing quality over time – more than any other Canadian plant in IQS history.”

The President of Toyota Motor North America , Yoshi Inaba also joined the ceremony, telling Cambridge Team Members, “You are the only plant to build Lexus vehicles outside of Japan . Now, it is known around the world.”

TMMC President, Brian Krinock commented, “Customers do have a voice and that’s what makes this award so special. Our team members build each vehicle as they were making it for their own families. We will display this award with pride.”

TMMC Chairman, Ray Tanguay , has been with TMMC for 20 years. While speaking to Team Members, he reflected, “Twenty years ago I had no idea how high TMMC would climb or how successful we’d become.” He went on to tell them, “You have earned your place among the very best car manufacturing companies in the world.”

This is TMMC’s ninth J.D. Power Award for Initial Plant Quality. The nine awards are as follows:

Toyota Corolla Production Starts in Mississippi

Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda was on-hand Thursday in Blue Springs, Mississippi for the opening of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi, the company’s newest North American production facility. The plant represents an $800 million investment by the company that started with the groundbreaking in 2007. The plant will be one of the primary North American production facilities for the Corolla, the other being the North Cambridge, Ontario plant, which will continue to produce the popular compact sedan.

Toyoda joined Mississippi governor Haley Barbour and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Mississippi president Masafumi Hamaguchi at the plant’s opening ceremonies. The plant has an annual production capacity of 150,000 and will employ almost 2000 workers. Engines for the cars will be sourced from Toyota’s Buffalo, West Virginia engine plant. Blocks and heads for the engine come from the company’s Bodine Aluminum casting plants in Troy, Missouri and Jackson, Tennessee.

Production of the Corolla took place for many years at the company’s Fremont, California joint-venture NUMMI plant with General Motors until its closure in 2010. A small number of Corollas sold in North America were sourced from Japan in the interim period after NUMMI’s closure, but the bulk of North American Corollas were sourced from Ontario, according to a Toyota spokesperson.

As part of the opening ceremonies, Toyota also announced a parternship with the CREATE Foundation and a donation of $5 million a year for 10 years to go toward the public school system in Pontotoc, Union and Lee counties. The

Toyota to Unveil Concept Hybrids at Tokyo Motor Show

The Tokyo Motor Show will be held from November 30 through to December 11 and Toyota Motor Corporation will be unveiling several concept cars at the show, including a Prius Plug-in Hybrid, a Fuell-cell vehicle, and a compact-class dedicated hybrid.

The company said that it is aiming “to make fresh proposals concerning the dream and joy of motor vehicles under the concept ‘Fun to Drive, Again’.”

Included in the six cars which Toyota will unveil at the show is the Aqua, or the Prius C as it will be labelled outside of Japan. A compact-class car with a suitably compact price-tag is said to offer a “groundbreaking” fuel efficiency of approximately 35 kilometres to the litre, according to the JC08 test cycle.

Toyota describes the car as providing “the joys of hybrid vehicle ownership, such as superior fuel efficiency, user friendliness and fun, to as many people as possible” in a body that, at less than four metres in length, “offers outstanding handling.”

Five other cars will be shown off at the Tokyo Motor Show:

Toyota Fun-Vii (world premiere)

A concept vehicle that heralds a future where people, cars and society are linked.

Compact Rear-Wheel-Drive Sports Vehicle (world premiere)

The prototype model of a compact rear-wheel-drive vehicle jointly developed by Fuji Heavy Industries and TMC.

Prius Plug-in Hybrid (Japan premiere)

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid, an environment-friendly vehicle that combines features from both pure-electric vehicles and gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles, is equipped with a new, high-capacity lithium-ion battery that can be charged from a household outlet. Able to operate as an electric vehicle on short trips and as a gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle on medium to long trips, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid can be used regardless of battery charge status or charging infrastructure availability.

With this vehicle, TMC aims to address environmental issues such as the reduction of fossil fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and atmospheric pollution. A production model is planned for launch by TMC in early 2012 with fuel economy exceeding 57 km/L*3 and an EV cruising range*4 (on fully charged battery) of 23.4 km, positioning the plug-in hybrid as a leading next-generation eco-car coming after gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles.
