Maserati’s upcoming model likely to be called Levante

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Car News

Modena/Stuttgart (dpa) – Maserati’s new mid-range saloon, which is designed to compete head-on with the BMW 5 series, is likely to be called Levante, according to Germany’s auto motor und sport magazine.

Early prototypes have been spotted while undergoing trials.

The Italian maker has trademarked the name Levante for the baby Maserati which will slot into the range beneath the four-door Quattroporte. The new car should reach the showrooms by 2013 with a price tag of around 60,000 euros (80,000 dollars). Experts expect the saloon to come with an economical six-cylinder engine rather than the thirsty eight pot unit fitted to its larger stablemate.

Maserati aims to sell 20,000 vehicles a year of the new car as part of a drive to break out of the luxury sector into mid-range territory where higher volume sales are possible. The Levante will not be built at the firm’s headquarters in Modena but assembled at a factory which used to belong to the Bertone design studios.
