Buffett’s firm buys 10 million share stake in GM

OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) – Mr Warren Buffett’s company is apparently bullish on the United States (US) auto industry.

His company, Berkshire Hathaway took a new stake of 10 million in shares in General Motors (GM) in the first quarter. The investment comes as the Detroit automaker continues to rebound from bankruptcy three years ago. It posted a first-quarter net income of US$1 billion (S$1.3 billion), fuelled by US vehicle sales.

Mr Buffett drives a GM-made Cadillac DTS sedan, so the investment could a further sign of his preference among US automakers. Berkshire is not invested in Ford Motor or Chrysler, which is majority owned by Fiat. But the purchase of the GM stake, worth about US$214 million as of Tuesday, could also have been made by one of Berkshire’s other investment managers.

Omaha-based Berkshire also revealed in a regulatory filing on Tuesday that it boosted its stake in Wal-Mart by almost 8 million shares to 46.7 million shares.

The first-quarter move to expand Berkshire’s stake in Wal-Mart came before The New York Times published a report detailing allegations that Wal-Mart executives used bribes to speed the retailer’s expansion in Mexico.

Mr Buffett told Berkshire shareholders earlier this month, however, that the scandal didn’t change his view on Wal-Mart’s value or its earning power.

Berkshire officials don’t typically comment on the quarterly investment reports, and they did not respond to a message on Tuesday about the latest update.

The documents Berkshire filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) also don’t reveal everything Mr Buffett and the company’s two new investment managers were buying and selling in the first quarter. That’s because regulators allow them to omit some of the company’s holdings from the report.

Berkshire tweaked a number of positions in its US$75.3 billion portfolio during the first three months of 2012. It also added a stake of 1.6 million Viacom shares, which was the only new holding reported besides GM.

It also boosted its investments in DirecTV, Liberty Media, DaVita and the Bank of New York Mellon.

Berkshire reduced its holdings in Intel, Kraft Foods, Dollar General, Procter Gamble and Verisk Analytics.

The IBM stake that Berkshire first reported last fall grew to 64.4 million shares by the end of March from 63.9 million in December.

GM to drop Facebook ads due to low consumer impact

DETROIT/SAN FRANCISCO (REUTERS) – General Motors (GM) said on Tuesday it will stop advertising on Facebook, even as the social networking website prepares to go public, with a source familiar with the matter saying the automaker had decided Facebook’s advertisements had little impact on consumers.

The decision by GM, the third-largest advertiser in the United States (US), marks the first highly visible crack in Facebook’s strategy and underscores doubts about whether advertising on Facebook works better than traditional media.

‘This does highlight what we are arguing is the riskiness of the overall Facebook business model,’ said Mr Brian Wieser, Internet and media analyst at Pivotal Research Group.

‘It is not a sure thing. It sure looks likely that it will be one of the most important ad-supported media properties, but it’s not certain because there will be marketers who are challenged to prove the effectiveness of the marketing vehicle.’

For now, these worries do not appear to be impeding strong investor demand, with Facebook increasing the size of its offering by 25 per cent to raise about US$15 billion (S$19 billion), a separate source told Reuters on Tuesday.

Facebook, founded eight years ago by Mr Mark Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm room, is expected to start trading on the Nasdaq on Friday.

GM said it will still have Facebook pages, which cost nothing to create and for which it pays no fees, to market its vehicles and added that it is not unusual for it to move spending around various media outlets.

‘In terms of Facebook specifically, while we currently do not plan to continue with advertising, we remain committed to an aggressive content strategy through all of our products and brands, as it continues to be a very effective tool for engaging with our customers,’ GM said.

Facebook declined to comment on GM’s move.

Concerns about advertising on Facebook are not confined to GM, with an executive at another large consumer products company saying it was hard to know if it is worth the money spent.

‘Is it just a shiny new object, or is it a real value proposition?’ said the executive, who asked not to be identified.

But Ford Motor said it was committed to advertising on Facebook and is boosting its spending, including ad buys.

The lithium-ion battery is incorporated into the frame and needs 2.5 hours to fully charge. On long trial tours, only a few simple steps are required to remove the battery and replace it with a charged one.

Hertz Adds Award-Winning Electric Vauxhall Ampere to its Car Share Club in London

Hertz and longstanding partner Vauxhall Motors add the 2012 European Car of the Year to Hertz on Demand car sharing fleet in London

The Hertz Corporation (NYSE: HTZ), the world’s largest general use car rental brand, has announced that through its partnership with Vauxhall Motors, customers will be able to rent the stylish, electric Ampera from the Hertz on Demand EV car sharing fleet in London. The revolutionary vehicle has a sophisticated propulsion system, including an extended range of up to 360 miles. The Ampera will be available to rent from next month at http://www.hertzondemand.co.uk.

Voted the Car of the Year 2012, Vauxhall Ampera delivers between 25-50 miles of battery-powered electric drive with zero tailpipe emissions while driving. Customers wanting to use the electric vehicle on longer trips can do so with the Ampera’s on-board range-extending engine which helps to sustain the battery life, allowing the car to be used on distances of up to 360 miles in a single journey. A small 1.4-litre petrol-fuelled engine/generator runs at optimum efficiency, generating enough electricity to power the electric motor (but not the wheels) and operates seamlessly as part of the Ampera’s powertrain. The car seats four adults in comfort and its hatchback design offers excellent practicality.

The Ampera will incorporate Hertz On Demand’s leading, proprietary in-car technology which provides members a safe and superior car sharing experience. In the car, a hands-free audio kit connects members to an in-house Member Care Center representative – available 24/7, 365 days a year – should they have questions, need assistance or need to extend their use of the car. Hertz On Demand is able to “communicate” with the vehicle, enabling representatives to unlock, engage and locate vehicles and cars are equipped with iPod connectivity, along with Bluetooth capabilities for hands free driving.
