MADRID, Spain (Xinhua) – Sales of new cars in Spain rose by 5.9 percent in the month of August in comparison with the same month in 2010, according to figures published Thursday, while industrial associations said the statistics may be misleading.

The figures, which are published by the associations of car manufacturers (ANFAC) and sales organizations (GANVAN), showed that 47,224 new vehicles were sold in Spain last month.

Though the 5.9 percent rise in sales in comparison with a year ago is the first time there has been an inter-annual improvement in the sales of new cars in 13 months, both GANVAN and ANFAC stressed that this is merely a statistical effect and does not reflect the true state of the Spanish car market.

The main reason for the positive figures was largely the result of increase of sales tax from 16 percent to 18 percent, combined with the end of the Government’s Plan 2000E, which gave financial incentives to new car buyers in an attempt to stimulate the market.

In fact, August 2011 was the second worst month for car sales in Spain in the past 20 years, with August 2010 the worst month in this period, with only 44,578 new cars sold.

In comparison, 78,913 new cars were sold this July, four percent lower than July last year.

Sales in the first eight months of this year are the lowest they have been since 1989, with just 568,354 cars sold, 22.2 percent less than in the first eight months of 2010 and ANFAC calculates 2011 will end with 600,000 less cars sold than in 2010.

“Car sales are below minimum levels,” commented the General Secretary of ANFAC, Luis Valero while speaking on Spanish national radio on Thursday morning.

Valero expressed his hope that the export market would help to sustain the industry in Spain.

If you’re looking for a strong yet safe vehicle then look no further than the 2010 Ford Taurus. This car was just earned the illustrious five star rating for both driver and passenger side crash tests. It also just won the “Top Safety Pick” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

So what makes this car safer than the others?

The new Taurus features crash-avoidance technologies, such as a segment-first, radar-based forward collision warning system that helps drivers avoid accidents. The system, enabled by Adaptive Cruise Control, uses a radar sensor to detect moving vehicles ahead and provides a visual “heads-up” warning signal and an audible warning when slower-moving traffic is detected ahead.

Instead of the car reacting to accidents, it actually helps you avoid them in the first place. Now that’s what I call safety!

But what about when the accident does occur?

The new 2010 Taurus earned the five-star and “Top Safety Pick” ratings based in part on advanced features such as the Personal Safety System(TM) – a suite of protection technologies, including dual-stage front air bags and front-passenger weight classification, which work together to help protect occupants in moderate to severe crashes. The Ford-exclusive Safety Canopy® features side curtain air bags that help protect front and rear outboard passengers in both rollover and side-impact crashes.

It used to be that only the front driver and passenger had bags, now the Ford Taurus has them also at the sides and back passenger side.

The 2010 Ford Taurus should be on the list of anyone who wants to buy a car.

After a landmark government bailout, General Motors has emerged from bankruptcy on a mission to win back American car buyers. In an effort to change their corporate culture and re-focus on customers and cars, the revamped automaker is asking consumers to “Tell Fritz.”

The new campaign allows people to go online and send their comments to company executives, express their views and give input on the direction of the new GM. In addition, executives, including CEO Fritz Henderson, recently invited consumers to meet them and drive all of the latest models at the company’s Michigan Proving Grounds.

And the new commitment to customers may be paying off. The company recently announced they would be building 60,000 more vehicles this year than originally planned, and have recalled over a thousand previously laid off workers to help build them.

Dealix, a division of Cobalt and an industry leader in automotive sales leads for dealers, dealer groups and manufacturers, announced today that it will power the car quote and dealer selector platform on Yahoo! Autos beginning next month. Yahoo! Autos , one of the leading automotive research websites, attracts a broad range of car buyers, with over 6.5 million unique visitors shopping on the site each month, according to May 2009 comScore Media Metrix data.

Car shoppers on Yahoo! Autos can research and compare vehicles, read expert reviews, and get information on vehicle incentives. Once they decide on a vehicle, Dealix’s new Lead Platform will present consumers with a choice of local dealers and quickly deliver the request to the chosen dealer. This will enable dealers to launch a fast response to consumers’ inquiries and deliver a better overall car buying experience.

“Yahoo! Autos’ extensive expertise in delivering a great online shopping experience for millions of car buyers, coupled with Dealix’s leading technology and strong relationships with auto dealers, creates a great experience for the buyer, while speeding sales for U.S. auto dealers,” said Ed Crawford, vice president of strategic planning and business development for Dealix. “Our research and firsthand experience show that when you present qualified, local dealers to car buyers and facilitate a seamless and quick connection between the two, the overall experience is better for the car buyer and helps the dealer to match them with their ideal car.”
