Shore introduces its new Motoring columnist Andy Mikonis

A chance connection with an established auto journalist and editor over a dozen years ago set the career course that brings me to you as Shore‘s new “Motoring” columnist. Because I was a hands-on car guy with a master’s in English, he told me at the time I was perfect for the job—if there was one. Having then recently finished that degree, I had moved to the other side of the desk, and had become disillusioned at the prospects of landing a full-time college level teaching position in a place where I wanted to live.

Though Detroit would have been a natural migration for my new automotive career aspirations, it did not meet that qualification, either. I stayed in Chicago, now having lived three quarters of my life within a few miles of Lake Michigan. The Bridgeport neighborhood has been home for eleven years, in a building whose newest wing is 120 years old, its former stable now a three-car garage perfect to house my automotive addictions.

Writing for car club magazines gave me proof to show editors I could write about cars, and gradually I started to get professional articles published. The next step was joining the Midwest Automotive Media Association, where I met Jim Jackson, who brought me on to write for the Times newspaper. Over the years, my writing has made its way into numerous publications, including Car and Driver, Automobile and Collectible Automobile magazines.

I’m told I was fascinated with all things automotive at a very young age. Though my father wasn’t a car guy per se, one birthday a new Datsun 280Z 2+2 appeared. He drove it quite spiritedly, especially on frequent weekend trips to Northern Wisconsin with the 10-year-old, saucer-eyed me aboard. Not long after, he took a position managing a company’s small fleet, which included three Ferraris. The subsequent thrill rides really set the hook.

Despite my lust for long-nosed sports cars, when I suddenly decided to buy an “old” car at 15, my first automotive purchase was quite accidentally a 1961 Chrysler Windsor. In researching it, I discovered the Chrysler 300 “Letter Series” and the 1961 Chrysler 300G. Here was a car with the same styling that I was now falling for, a larger engine with dual carburetors, and a leather interior with four individual bucket seats. I had to have one, and eventually, I did.

Twenty-five years later, I still own that car. In that time it has turned wheels in thirty-eight states, from Maine to Florida, to Texas and California. On the California trip in 1999, my then-girlfriend Carole and I ended up in Las Vegas; we were married in the car at a drive-through chapel. Our first road trip together had been in the Chrysler, driving all the way around Lake Michigan.

In the intervening years I’ve owned many vintage vehicles, mostly domestic. The affinity for sports cars later resurfaced, and in 2007 we bought a car I had wanted before I knew what a Chrysler 300 was, a Jaguar E-Type Series 2 coupe in British Racing Green. Since I own my cars to use them, we flew to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and drove it back. Carole recently reminded me it hasn’t been very far from home since a successful trip to Kentucky, and suggested we plan a spring drive. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, I’ll have had the chance to get out to the garage to dust it off and start the pre-trip maintenance.

Having the opportunity to drive hundreds of cars has certainly been a dream for a gearhead like me, and I finally feel like it has given me the perspective to competently evaluate new products and developments. But more importantly, whether it’s new cars or old, since automobiles play such a big part in our culture they have a particular way of bringing people together. The friendships I’ve made along the way have certainly been rewarding, and those who build our cars are an interesting lot who keep me fascinated with covering the industry. It has taken me to many places around the country, and even to France to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Next up, it’s off to Virginia then Wyoming for testing you can read about here in future issues.

2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8

Though today’s popular Chrysler 300 is named for the Chrysler 300 “Letter Series” of 1955 to 1965, as the owner of one of the originals I never felt the new 300 really captured their spirit as a modern descendant, with one exception: the Chrysler 300 SRT8.

Like those old 300s that rocked NASCAR and set land speed records, the 300 SRT8 is a low production, high-performance edition offered in limited color choices. SRT stands for Street and Racing Technology, Chrysler’s performance division.

Along with the extensive reworking all Chrysler 300s saw for 2011, the SRT8 received a new engine upped to 6.4 liters from 6.1 for its 2012 model year debut. Yes, it does result in an additional 45 horsepower, but engineers were also able to incorporate a cylinder deactivation system, as on the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, to the SRT engine for the first time. This allows the big V-8 to save fuel by seamlessly switching to run on four cylinders at a steady cruise.

More power and better mileage are nothing to dismiss, but suspension modifications for 2012 are what stood out the most to me. The previous generation SRT8′s suspension could be harsh on less than perfect roads, which we certainly don’t have a shortage of around here. In the new car, engineers struck near perfect balance between confident cornering and graceful bump absorption.

Performance and fuel economy were the last things on my mind when we wearily stepped off the red-eye from Honolulu in December to find a 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 waiting for us. Instead, it was finding the switches for heat for the SRT-trademark suede sport seats, and my number one new option I didn’t know I needed: a heated steering wheel.

Major carmakers unite for fast charging technology

The EVS26 event in Los Angeles will see eight of the world’s leading automakers join forces to demonstrate a single-port DC fast charging system that is meant to make it easier and faster than ever to charge electric vehicles.

Giants of the motoring world, Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen will support the harmonised single-port fast charging approach, which is known as DC-fast charging with a Combined Charging System (pictured), in both the USA and Europe.CombinedChargingSystem

The system uses one-phase AC charging; as well as fast three-phase AC charging, DC charging at home; and an ultra-fast DC charging system for public stations. It will allow customers to charge at most existing charging stations irrespective of the power source.

Its design came from collaborative review and analysis of a number of existing charging strategies, as well as the preferences of US and European customers. The Charging System was developed for all vehicle markets in an effort to create a uniform standard.

It has been chosen by the Society of International Engineers because of its fast charging and harmonisation. It is expected to be available commercially at the end of the year, with vehicles using the technology to be available in 2013. In addition, the International Society of Automotive Engineers picked the Combined Charging System as a standard that will incrementally extend type-one AC charging – it is expected to be published during the summer. Meanwhile, the European Association of Vehicle Manufacturers selected the system as an AC/DC charging interface that will be implemented into all new vehicle types from 2017 onwards.

Mr Money: the most profitable car companies

It feels like only yesterday that fellow American giant, General Motors, was
fighting for its survival, which it managed courtesy of US taxpayers.
Miraculously, the company has dragged itself from “bankruptcy” to
$9.2bn profitability in about half a decade.

Germany’s Daimler is not far behind with $7.3bn, but Hyundai is breathing down
its neck with $6.9bn which secures the South Korean firm a place in the top
five, narrowly beating BMW, on $6.8bn.

Maverick Honda ($6.4bn) thrashed the larger and more mainstream Toyota
($4.9bn) and Nissan ($3.8bn). Rounding off the top 10 is another South
Korean firm, Kia which is the newest, youngest kid on the block.
Interestingly, if sister companies Hyundai and Kia combined their respective
profit figures hey would total precisely $10bn, making them the third most
profitable car producing group after VW and Ford. If, a decade or two ago,
anyone dared suggest that the then humble Hyundai-Kia partnership would take
on and beat the colossal General Motors empire, they would have been
declared nuts.

Renault ($2.7bn) just misses out on a top 10 slot, as does Volvo Group
($2.6bn) and the first of the Chinese, SAIC ($2.1bn), which shares 13th
place with Tata of India ($2.1bn). Joint 15th, with profit figures of $1.7bn
apiece, are Donfeng of China and Fiat of Italy.

Peugeot is surprisingly close to the bottom of the profitability league
($0.8bn) and with such a big organisation making such comparatively small
profits it’s no wonder that it’s looking at cost-cutting. Already there is
talk of its UK headquarters in Coventry merging with Slough’s Citroën HQ,
with a view to cutting down on real estate and overall staffing costs.

Japan’s most under-estimated car company, Mazda of Hiroshima, is even closer
to the bottom 20 because it makes fine, borderline premium cars at extremely
attractive prices, which in turn means that the firm isn’t as profitable as
it could – perhaps, should – be. These days Isuzu ($0.6bn) is better known
for trucks than cars, small-car maker Suzuki ($0.5bn) is too busy selling
its cars at amazingly low prices to make a large profit and Mitsubishi looks
in sorry shape at the foot of the table with unremarkable products, prices
and annual profit figures – of $0.2bn (or less than one per cent of VW’s
profits).

* What’s all this about Saga’s research indicating that more needs to be
done to improve access to legal services for today’s over-50s? This is not
an issue solely for those who have reached the half century, it’s more of a
problem for drivers aged 17 to 49.

The good news is that the company is launching a new legal service that
enables motorists and others to download simple documents and templates to
help them draft letters to challenge what they consider to be unfair fees,
fines and the like – including potholes and the damage they can cause.

These Saga Legal Services documents are available at no extra cost for
customers who pay for the firm’s Motor Legal Protection cover. Those without
it pay a “small fee,” says the company. Most are £2.99 apiece,
although the “agreement for the sale of a motor vehicle” document
is £24.95.

As we went to press, Saga couldn’t decide whether to open this service to
all motorists willing to pay for relevant documents, or whether it’s
operating a closed shop for Saga customers only.

*Ford is marketing its Fiesta Econetic as a supermini that will do 795 miles
on one tank, thanks to its 85mpg. But it deliberately avoids disclosing the
official retail price. Why? Because it’s so expensive – £14,445 to £16,195.

Meanwhile, Honda dealers are selling some versions of the CR-V 4×4 with
thousands off – and zero per cent finance. If you’ve got about £26,000,
you’re in.
