Tesla Take-On Top Gear over Roadster Slander

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Motoring

Tesla Take On Top Gear over Roadster SlanderElectric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is knee-deep in controversy, this time in relation to the use of their Roadster on a popular BBC motoring showing show. Citing inaccurate and unfair portrayal of the EV, Tesla has filed a law suit against Top Gear, specifically naming producer Andrew Wilman and presenter Jeremy Clarkson in the motion.

The accusation relates to a segment during which the crew were shown manually pushing the Roadster into a hanger after the battery ran flat, also suggesting that one of the cars they had been supplied with had a fault with the brakes while the other’s overheated. Tesla have adamantly refuted such claims an allege none of them to be true, accusing the show of damaging the company name simply for entertainment value.

Although two years have passed since the episode in question, worldwide re-runs are broadcast to millions of homes every day which, in Tesla’s opinion, simply perpetuates the untruths and opens them up to the entire world.

The latest is a string of high-profile law suits involving Tesla since the company’s relatively recent incarnation. However, the explosive popularity of Top Gear along with worldwide exposure the show is give will likely see the latest action drawn a great deal more attention than previous instances.

.

Highlight of the Knysna festival will be the hillclimb.

From soapboxes to Supervan, slot cars to a kart grand prix, next month’s Knysna Speed Festival promises a week of motoring action.

Building on the success of the Renault Knysna Hillclimb, which first took place in 2009 and immediately captured the imagination of the country’s motorsport enthusiasts leading to a bigger and more involving event in 2010, for this year the organisers have opted to run the climb as the climax of a week-long festival of speed.

The date has been brought forward from October to mid-May, which sees friendlier weather.

The Knysna Speed Festival commences on Friday May 13 with a week-long series of motoring events including karting, slot-car racing, classic car show, and soapbox derby. The festival’s star event will be the Renault Knysna Hillclimb, run over a two-kilometre course up the hill to the entrance of Simola Country Estate.

Entries are now open but the field will be limited to 80 vehicles, and amongst the star drivers expected to entertain the crowds are the previous two year’s winners, Sarel van der Merwe and Geoff Mortimer, along with Ian and Jaki Scheckter, Robbie Smith and, making his event debut, Grant McCleery.

Travelling from France especially for the event will be former world motocross champion Jean-Michel Bayle who will compete in a Renault.

Documentation and scrutineering will take place on the Friday with proceedings open to the public, and all of the competing cars will take part in a town parade.

The types of cars that will be on view encompass road cars, racing saloons and single-seaters, sportscars and the ever-popular and soul-stirring historics, all of which will run throughout the Saturday and Sunday.

Seoul Motor Show: GM Korea, Ssangyong sketch out future plans

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Motoring

South Korea’s automakers came under the spotlight March 31 on the first press day of the Seoul International Auto Show, with GM Korea and Ssangyong unveiling new models and plans in a bid to catch Hyundai and Kia.

GM Korea, making its first major announcement since dropping the Daewoo name earlier this year, showcased a new concept car, the Miray, promising that it was the future of the brand.

The hybrid car is designed in the tradition of muscle cars such as the Corvair Monza and Super Spyder, with sporty touches such as the carbon fibre spoiler, dual cockpit and Le Mans racer-style vertical (scissor) doors, making the model one of the most eye-catching of the show.

It will also be introducing several other vehicles at the show, many of them already commonplace on Western roads such as the Aveo, Camaro, Corvette and its new SUV, the Captiva.

Ssangyong, itself struggling with a new identity after being purchased by Indian automotive giant Mahindra Mahindra last year, is showing ten cars on its stand, many of which could soon be available in overseas markets as part of a plan to boost sales.

In keeping with the show’s theme of “Green Revolution on Wheels,” Ssangyong showcased two electric concepts, the KEV-2 and KEV-2 CUV, electrified versions of its Korando compact SUV.

Both are said to be headed for production at some point at the future, although nothing official has been confirmed by the automaker.

One larger-than-life model which definitely will be on the roads before long was the Chairman W Summit, a new, super luxury version of its huge sedan which is a favourite of South Korean limousine firms.

The Seoul International Motor Show is open to the public April 1 – 10 in Seoul, Korea.

Carmarthenshire Council adds electric cars to pool

A white i-MiEV with council branding, parked in a street. The car can travel up to 90 miles on a single charge

Two electric ‘eco-cars’ are being used by Carmarthenshire council as part of a strategy to encourage the use of green transport.

The Mitsubishi i-MiEVs will be added to a pool of 70 vehicles used by council staff.

Both £20,000 battery-powered, emission-free cars were paid for with an assembly government grant.

Former Top Gear presenter Quentin Wilson said: “It’s a remarkably shrewd purchase on the council’s part.”

The motoring journalist drove the electric car himself for a year as part of a government trial.

He conceded that the initial cost of the cars “might seem expensive to begin with” but said that the council would save on running costs.

“It was £2 to do 100 hundred miles and I never ran out [of electricity].

Camarthenshire Council said it is the first local authority in Wales to use electric fleet cars.

The vehicles can be charged from any household 240W socket, and take approximately seven hours to fully charge, according to the car’s manufacturer.

The council said it believes that running the electric cars would cost only 45p per 100 miles compared with £12 per 100 miles for an equivalent petrol car.

Transport manager Steve Pilliner said the introduction of the cars was part of Carmarthenshire Council’s wider environment and transport strategy:

“We will over time be introducing charging points at locations across the county which will be available for public use. It’s part of our overall aim to encourage more sustainable forms of transport for work related travel.”

WASHINGTON/DETROIT—Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Corp took fresh steps to scale back production or reduce orders of some parts in North America as supplies remain disrupted after the March 11 Japan earthquake.

The global auto industry is grappling with disruptions to its production and supply base in the wake of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis in northern Japan.

About 13 per cent of worldwide auto output has been lost due to parts shortages.

Honda said it will cut production at its U.S. and Canadian car plants from Wednesday and Toyota, the world’s biggest automaker, told North American dealers to curtail orders of replacement parts to ensure an adequate supply.

Honda says it will be cancelling an overtime shift at its Alliston plant on Saturday because of a parts shortage. Production volume will also be cut by more than half. Honda calls the situation “fluid” but says North American plants will continue normal production through Friday.

There is a chance parts supply problems could interrupt the production schedule and work at the Alliston facility.

“The situation in Japan is still far from stable,” said IHS Automotive analyst, Rebecca Lindland.

“We have to prepare. The only thing that the industry can do to protect themselves is to try and anticipate where we can have shortages and try and compensate for the level of uncertainty we’re operating in right now.”

Toyota told dealers an assessment of inventory and the status of suppliers following the disaster prompted action to ensure enough components for the North American market.

“Damage sustained by certain Japanese parts suppliers will interrupt their normal production,” Toyota said in a statement that also noted current inventories are adequate.

Toyota told dealers it has placed 233 parts out of 300,000 — less than 1 percent—on so-called controlled allocation in order to “maximize future availability.”

A memo sent to Toyota and Lexus dealers on Tuesday and obtained by Reuters said Toyota’s supply chain is currently “absorbing fluctuations” in shipments, using existing stock.

A separate memo identified key parts in question, including steering wheel covers, shock absorbers, door fixtures, seals, airbag sensor components, mudguards and certain mouldings.

Toyota and Lexus dealers must now fill out special order release forms for those parts

Toyota restricts parts orders; Honda cuts output

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Toyota

DETROIT — Shortages of auto parts from Japan are hitting North American operations at Honda and Toyota.

Toyota Motor Corp. on Tuesday said it wants its U.S. car dealers to stop ordering more than 200 replacement parts made in Japan because it’s worried about running out of them. And Honda Motor Co. said it will temporarily cut production at its North American auto factories starting Wednesday due to shortages.

It’s all because of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan and its huge auto industry. The quake damaged many parts supply companies that make key components for cars and trucks in the U.S. and other countries. Industry analysts expect many automakers to run into shortages until production returns to normal. No one’s certain when that will be.

Already several automakers have been forced to cut production. Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Co. and others have stopped taking orders for certain paint colors because a specialized pigment factory hasn’t been able to come back on line.

Toyota has restricted orders for some Japanese components made at more severely damaged plants to make sure they remain available.

It has told U.S. dealers they can’t order 233 parts for Lexus, Scion and Toyota models unless they have a customer who needs one for a repair.

Dealers said the parts include brake rotors, body panels, shock absorbers and other components. They mainly are for the Prius gas-electric hybrid

and hybrid versions of the Highlander SUV, and the Camry midsize sedan.

Toyota spokesman Steve Curtis said he did not know specifically which models were affected.

“We are asking the dealers to refrain from ordering parts in excess of what they need,” he said.

Parts managers at some dealerships may have ordered additional parts made in Japan in anticipation of shortages, and those orders could cause Toyota to run short, said Earl Stewart, who owns a Toyota dealership in North Palm Beach, Florida.

“It’s not necessarily being a bad guy. It’s just doing your job,” Stewart said. “If everybody decides to stock up in advance, it’s kind of like hoarding and suddenly there’s a shortage.”

About 70 percent of Toyota cars and trucks sold in the U.S. are built in North America, but roughly one in four parts in those vehicles still come from factories in Japan.

Production of most replacement parts resumed in Japan on March 17, and Toyota began shipping them to the U.S. soon after.

Meanwhile, Honda has run short of some engine, transmission and electrical parts that come from Japan. As a result, it will cut the number of hours that some North American assembly lines operate each day. Cuts

Motoring in Spain

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Motoring

I AM not a mechanic or even literate as far as mechanical things are concerned, especially with motor cars but my husband tells me that I more than make up for it in other ways (cooking?)  I have heard ‘catalytic converters’ being discussed in our local meeting place where we women sit to make sure our men are not paying any Spanish señoritas too much attention.  How do they work and what is special about them?  Please keep it very simple for the above reason and thank you in advance. Rose Smith, Roquetas del Mar.

THANK YOU for your intelligent question and I applaud you for wanting to know.  Most male drivers in my experience have very little knowledge of what these mandatory devices are and do not want to know but as these parts of the exhaust systems of petrol engine vehicles are very important and being also very expensive to replace, your enquiry is admirable.  You will be able to supply the facts the next time the subject is discussed.

What is a catalytic converter (CC)?  It is a stainless steel box in the exhaust system with steel baffles, coated with a compound that when hot exhaust gasses flow past them, a chemical reaction takes place and with the resulting chemical reaction causing the dangerous toxic parts of the exhaust gasses to be converted to far less dangerous gasses before they are passed into our atmosphere. They can only be used with non-leaded petrol, and the expensive petrol for high performance cars now has a lead replacement chemical added instead of lead for this reason.

The metallic compound on the baffles is platinum; a mineral that is worth much more per Kg than even gold and this makes the device very expensive to manufacture.  A new major problem reported in the UK now is the theft of the CCs from parked vehicles as a new one for a large BMW for example costs over €5,000.  They work efficiently depending on use for up to 80,000 to 120,000km and a part of the MOT/ITV test is pollution check of the exhaust.   If the test report fails due to this item, it can be an expensive job to replace to pass the vehicle.

Luckily the baffles need only be plated (like chrome-plating) with a thin layer of platinum for the device to work efficiently.  So if buying an older petrol-engined vehicle, it would be prudent to insist on it being ITV-ed with your direct supervision or by a trusted friend, to avoid being cheated before parting with the cash.  If it is a classic (a historic) which means that it is 25-plus years old in Spain,

Top Gear sued by Tesla Motors over ‘rigged’ electric car test

Shame: Presenter Jeremy Clarkson is said to have delivered a scripted pay-off line before the car had been tested

Shame: Presenter Jeremy Clarkson is said to have delivered a scripted pay-off line before the car had been tested

They have rarely worried about who they might offend, but this time the Top Gear team may have driven too close to the edge.

Only months after insulting the whole of Mexico, the BBC’s flagship motoring show has been accused by the U.S. maker of the world’s fastest production electric car of faking a race.

Tesla Motors Inc yesterday issued a writ at the High Court over an episode featuring ‘the ultimate test for an electric car’ – a drag race between its Roadster and a petrol-powered Lotus Elise.

It was a test the Tesla – which has a top speed of 125mph and is favoured by film stars including George Clooney – appeared to fail after dramatically slowing down on the track and being pushed into a garage to await charging.

Presenter Jeremy Clarkson concluded: ‘It’s just a shame that in the real world it doesn’t seem to work.’

Now Tesla – a Californian company that builds its cars in the UK – is claiming defamation and malicious falsehood, saying the scenes were faked. Top Gear’s allegations that the brakes had also broken were false, it claimed.

The company said it became aware of the staging of the scene when its UK director of sales and marketing saw two scripts before the car had even been driven.

One of the scripts concluded with virtually the same pay-off line used by Clarkson. ‘It’s just a shame that in the real world it absolutely doesn’t work,’ it read.

Tesla also challenged Top Gear ‘about another script which called for the Roadster to be filmed being pushing into the hangar having run out of charge’.

It made its claim more than two years after the £87,000 Tesla Roadster – which can be powered from an ordinary domestic plug – was featured on the show.

The company decided to take action after the episode, originally broadcast in December 2008, featured on repeats and a DVD – despite pointing out the alleged errors to Top Gear’s production team.

Tesla claimed Top Gear ‘intentionally and/or recklessly, grossly misled potential purchasers of the Roadsters’.

Its reputation ‘has been severely damaged’, it added.

Last night, Tesla spokesman Myra Pasek told the Daily Mail: ‘We have repeatedly
