etyres Announces Record Sales Growth for 2010

PR Newswire — February 28, 2011

CAMBRIDGE, England, February 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — etyres, the UK’s leading online tyre company, announces record sales growth for the 2010 period.

Arctic weather conditions combined with rising consumer confidence in online ordering have driven sales to record heights for etyres.

etyres saw year on year sales grow by an impressive 26% in 2010 for the UK’s leading online tyres company and November also saw a massive 48% surge as vehicle owners rushed to have winter tyres fitted in order to cope with treacherous road conditions caused by severe weather.

Tony Bowman, managing director of etyres, said: “Our year on year growth is very strong and this is due to several combined factors.

“At the start of the year we had the worst winter since records began which contributed to a 64% sales boost for the first quarter of 2010. The snow returned with a vengeance at the end of the year and again we were inundated with orders.”

Mr Bowman also credited the increasing popularity of online ordering with fuelling the Cambridge-based company’s continued success.

Internet shopping is expected to rise by an average of 18% on the previous year, with total online sales in the UK estimated at around GBP69 billion.

Mr Bowman added: “We fully expect to exceed this percentage because consumers are turning to the web to track down bargains and our prices are up to 40% cheaper than the leading high street tyre depots due to our low overheads.”

Throughout the year, etyres has also continued to strengthen nationwide coverage by opening a further 20 branches around the country.

About etyres:

Launched in 1998, etyres is the UK’s first online tyres retailer. It operates a mobile fitting service, which means customers can have their tyres fitted at a location of their choice – either at their home or place of work.

Its low overheads mean the price customers pay is always low – up to 40% cheaper than the leading high street tyre depots on a wide range of tyres, from premium to budget brands.

etyres sells a number of different tyres in the UK ( http://www.etyres.co.uk/) including Continental car tyres ( http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyres/continental), caravan tyres, motorhome tyres, trailer tyres and 4×4 tyres online ( http://www.etyres.co.uk/4×4-tyres-vehicles) and well as car batteries (http://www.etyres.co.uk/uk-car-batteries) for many car types.

etyres is the registered Internet trade name of Fleet Mobile Tyres Ltd.

Mission iPossible drives BMW on

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Motoring

THIS is BMW’s sensational new electric car which offers supercar performance
and nearly 90mpg.

Tom Cruise will drive the electric/diesel hybrid i8 in new Mission Impossible
film The Ghost Protocol.

And it will go on sale in 2013 as part of a radical brand of BMW
electric/hybrid cars.

The brand, launched this week in Munich, will be called BMWi – with the first
models an electric city car, the BMW i3, and the high-performance i8 coup.

The i3 will be a zero-emission all-electric supermini with room for four and a
range in excess of 100 miles. It is aimed at commuters around the world. But
the car that will change the image of electric motoring will be the stunning
i8, a four-seat coup with supercar performance, but fuel economy of nearly
90mpg, a range of 435 miles and CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km – and
that means no road tax.

The incredible performance comes from a relatively small 1.5-litre turbo
diesel, boosted by two electric motors, that delivers 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds
and a top speed of 155mph. Expect a price around 100,000 plus.

BMW’s Sales and Marketing boss Ian Robertson said the new brand and cars would
“radically alter the motor industry and set a new benchmark for premium
electric cars”.

He added: “These cars and the i brand will shift the game and shape the future
of motoring.

“It will change the way we build cars with new materials and production
techniques and the way we drive.”

He said it was too early to talk prices for the new cars but said that the i3
- despite being a small city car – would have a premium price and cost more
than such rivals as the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt.

Luxury The ground-breaking brand follows a decision at the weekend by Rolls-
Royce, also owned by BMW, to develop an all-electric Phantom as the first
ultra-luxury electric car.

And BMW are also working on plans for an electric Mini – the German Group own
Mini – to complete their electric range.

To that end BMW have been testing a fleet of 600 prototype electric Minis in
the UK and around the world for the last two years.

And research from those drivers who took part in the Mini electric trials has
been vital in developing the BMW i3 city car.

Car sales keep retail figures on the up

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Motoring

Motor sales fell back 3.5pc in the month compared to December 2010 but increased almost 24pc on the year, according to official figures from the Central Statistics Office.

In January, retail sales volume increased by 4.6pc compared with January 2010 but if motor trades are excluded (which many analysts believe is a better indicator of consumer’s mood), sales decreased by 1.2pc.

Including motor trades, there was also a monthly decrease of 3.8pc.

Five categories showed year-on-year increases, including motoring, non-specialised stores, clothing and shoes, hardware and electrical goods.

However, substantial decreases were seen in department stores, furniture and lighting and newspapers and books.

The value of sales increased by 4.0pc when compared to the same month last year but dropped in relation to December’s figures.

Retail Ireland, the IBEC group that represents the retail sector, said the new CSO figures show a weak start for retailing in 2011.

Director Torlach Denihan said, “The value of core retail sales (excluding cars and bars) fell year-on-year by 1.5PC in January. The Budget hit pay packets in January and this had a major negative impact on spending towards the end of the month especially.

“Last year was the third year in a row in which the value of core retail sales fell and the cumulative decline is now over 20pc,” he added. “The sector needs urgent action from the incoming government. While prices have been cut to the bone, the cost of running a shop has not fallen.”

The classic Moggie is back!

Is it a car, a pod racer – or a fighter plane? It’s none of those; it’s a genuine Morgan three-wheeler – not a replica! – and it’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

The three-wheeler – immortalised by Peter Sellers in “The Party” – was built, with a variety of big V-twin motorcycle engines, from 1909 to 1953. Now the iconic design has been updated with 21st Century technology and classic aircraft styling cues to bring back a more carefree era when driving was fun and every journey an adventure.

It all starts with a long-stroke, pushrod engine from American custom builder SS, churning out 85kW and loads of low-revving torque. That’s mated to a five-speed Mazda car gearbox, which makes this the first Morgan three-wheeler with a reverse gear, and final drive is by toothed belt to a reinforced rear tyre.

The car weighs only 1100kg so performance – especially when you’re sitting in an open cockpit only 150mm off the deck! – is electrifying: 0-100 in 4.5sec and a top speed of 185km/h.

The tubular-steel chassis and aluminium body have been reinforced to meet modern safety standards, with full roll-bars for driver and passenger – the 2011 three-wheeler is street-legal in Britain and in the US!

But some things haven’t changed – the three-wheeler still holds long-distance speed records for one-litre cars set in the 1930′s so the bullet-shaped, aircraft-style body is unchanged.

A leather-padded cockpit complete with aircraft-style instruments adds to the open-cockpit flying feel.

A leather-padded cockpit complete with aircraft-style instruments (including a starter button that looks like a bomb release, complete with safety cover) adds to the open-cockpit flying feel, as does the fact that every extremity of the car is visible from the driver’s seat making the three-wheeler remarkably easy to drive – you really do fly it with the seat of your pants.

The Morgan three-wheeler will make its debut this

Edmunds: Ford, Toyota, GM to report higher February sales

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Toyota

Automakers are expected to post big gains in sales when they report February results this week. General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) is projected to have the largest boost increase from a year ago, up 37 percent.

A report from Edmunds.com projects new car sales for February to be about 937,000, a 20 percent jump from the same month last year and a 14 percent gain from last month. It also predicts the seasonally adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) will be 12.6 million, up from 12.5 million in January.

“February started slow, but it gained plenty of momentum over President’s Day weekend,” Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell said in a news release Sunday. “It was also the fifth consecutive month with a SAAR over 12 million, which is a good sign as the industry presses forward into March.”

Toyota, which operates a manufacturing plant in Georgetown, Ky., is expected to the next highest year-over-year gain, with sales growing 28.8 percent. Compared with January, Toyota sales are expected to grow by 11.2 percent.

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) is expected to post a 7 percent gain from February 2010, and the company’s February 2011 sales are expected to be nearly 20 percent higher than January.

Ford operates two manufacturing plants in Louisville. Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant produces F-Series Super Duty trucks and the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. The Louisville Assembly Plant is being retooled to produce the company’s next-generation compact SUV.

In January, the company posted its largest retail sales increase to begin a year in more than a decade, according to a previous Business First report. (For more, click here.)

Toyota’s global car production down in January

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Toyota

TOKYO (AP) – Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday its global production fell for the fifth straight month in January due to slumping sales in Japan.

The world’s No. 1 automaker said its worldwide production declined 4.7 percent year-on-year to 613,831 vehicles last month.

Toyota said the decline was due to weak demand in Japan. Toyota’s sales have been falling in Japan after government subsidies for green cars, including Toyota’s popular Prius hybrid, expired in September 2010.

Its auto production in Japan tumbled 13 percent to 234,045 vehicles in January.

Honda Motor Co. said its global production edged down 1.6 percent to 286,126 vehicles, marking the first year-on-year fall in 14 months.

Honda attributed the decline to slowing production in China. The company said January production in China dropped 13.5 percent as workers took off for China’s Lunar New Year holidays in early February.

Nissan Motor Co. said its worldwide production rose a robust 21.9 percent to 375,178 vehicles in January, marking the 16th consecutive month of year-on-year growth.

Nissan’s production in the United States grew 9.4 percent – the first increase in three months – to 43,242 vehicles. Its production in China jumped 34.4 percent to 107,452 vehicles.

Mazda Motor Corp. said its global production in January rose 8.0 percent to 106,321 vehicles. Mitsubishi Motors Corp. reported a 17.7 percent rise in worldwide output to 106,225.

Recipe for a classic car

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Motoring

There was a time when cars were considered to be an investment, but those days are gone. Much like death and taxes, car depreciation is unavoidable. From the highest-priced luxury marques to the mass-market family sedans, most new cars lose a substantial part of their value the minute they’re driven off the showroom floor.

They continue to depreciate as they get older – but some of of today’s models will become valuable collector’s cars in the future. Burchmore’s has a marketing association with British Car Auctions (BCA) in the United Kingdom, and these two companies say that it’s wise to invest in a future classic. But which future classics can you buy today?

According to BCA public relations manager Tim Naylor, if you want a car that has a good chance of gaining classic status in the years ahead – plus the premium values that go along with that – then there are some interesting options available to used car buyers.

“Second guessing future trends is never an exact science – after all who would have thought the 1980s would become fashionable again? Certainly in the collector’s car market, beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Rarity does not necessarily make for desirability, nor does an exclusive and limited model run and high list price necessarily mean a car will be worth more in years to come,” Naylor explains.

Mini

Currently the new Mini is highest ranked on the list of future classic. “The brand is always desirable, with early MINI One models continuing to hold their price well,” says Naylor.

Burchmore’s managing director Darryl Jacobson says there is strong demand for the convertible editions in South Africa, while the Clubman and new Countryman models are also likely to carve themselves a decent niche in the market.

“Ever since July 2001, when a whopping 50,000 Brits visited the new Mini showrooms over the launch weekend, this modern-day motoring icon has continued to fly off showroom floors. That’s a situation that’s unlikely to change in the near future,” Jacobson notes.

Given the popularity of the brand, they tend to be snapped up as soon as they hit the Burchmore’s sales floor. However, the company still offers the brand at wholesale prices.

DS3, Mazda RX8, Fiat 500

In a similar vein, there is the newly-launched Citroen DS3. “Named after the Citroen DS, the enormously successful executive car styled by Flaminio Bertoni and produced between 1955 and 1975, this car is a highly credible Mini competitor, which is also set to attain iconic classic status,” Jacobson believes. “Like the Mini, it is bold, quirky individualistic, different and classic. We are already seeing massive demand for the DS3 amongst used car
