Russia car sales are back on the rise but the logistics challenges of a huge country with a poor road system remain. In fact for the delivery of finished vehicles, there may be a need for as much as 50% more capacity.
The car market has sparked into life since the introduction of a scrappage scheme in March 2010. Sales in April were 20% higher than the same month in 2009 and, with continuing high tariff walls against importing new cars, look set to keep boosting local production. Both OEMs and logistics providers are planning for better times ahead.
These challenges and more will be the subject of intense discussions at this year’s Automotive Logistics Russia conference, to be held in St Petersburg from 22-24 June 2010. The fifth in the annual series, the event anticipates the challenges ahead with the theme: ‘Growth through Logistics: Controlling quality, processes, price and delivery in today’s Russia.’

Ford
Ford Motor Company, building on its success in measuring and reducing its own carbon footprint, today announced plans to survey 35 top global suppliers on their energy use and estimated greenhouse gas emissions.
Ford’s goal is to better understand the carbon footprint of its supply chain and use the data to eventually create a broad-based carbon management approach for its supply chain. The 35 suppliers represent close to 30 percent of Ford’s $65 billion in annual procurement spending.
The suppliers in the initial request include companies that make commodities such as seats, steering systems, tires and metal components, which require more energy to produce and thus have a larger carbon footprint. While many of these suppliers already measure their greenhouse gas emissions, the project would facilitate collaboration and sharing of processes and practices that can drive significant emissions reductions and help meet future regulatory requirements.

Nissan
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced today that 30 Nissan D22 4×4 pick-up trucks arrived in Haiti and were received by the United Nations’ World Food Programme. The trucks will be put to work immediately to deliver food, supplies and aid in the massive ongoing efforts to help rebuild lives in a nation ravaged by a devastating earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010.
The donation of trucks, in response to a request from former U.S. President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and currently UN Special Envoy for Haiti, is an expansion of relief efforts in Haiti sponsored by Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and its global community of employees.
With the donation of the pick-up trucks, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and its employees worldwide have contributed cash and products valued at nearly $750,000 to relief efforts in Haiti.
Immediately after the earthquake in January, Nissan employees took action to help – first with a donation of more than $100,000 cash, corporate matches for gifts from employees, and a commitment to partner with Habitat for Humanity International to construct new homes. In response to the request for trucks, Nissan’s Corporate Social Responsibility team worked with the U.N. to identify a partner relief organization and found a match in the World Food Programme, which took delivery of the trucks today in Port-au-Prince.

A recent survey by Jockey International, Inc. asked Americans who they’d most like to bring on a road trip, and George Clooney was named wingman of choice, edging out actor Will Smith. Funnyman Will Ferrell took the third spot, with star athletes Brett Favre, Tom Brady and Derek Jeter rounding out the list.
While Jockey can’t promise you a celebrity co-pilot, this classic American underwear and apparel brand might be able to help you with your ride. To celebrate and promote its popular Jockey Classics collection of men’s underwear, Jockey is offering a chance to win a vintage Ford Mustang as part of its Jockey Classic Road Trip tour.
The Jockey Classic Road Trip kicked off with an employee event on May 14 at Jockey headquarters in Kenosha, Wis. and will now proceed to various road trip destinations en route to weekend events in Indiana, Missouri, California, Washington and Iowa.

General Motors
GM Daewoo has officially unveiled its luxury car sedan, the Alpheon at the Busan International Motor Show. This is a seven-seat compact multi-purpose vehicle and is actually making its first appearance in Asia.
The Alpheon is based on the same GM global architecture as the Buick LaCrosse, one of the three finalists for 2010 North American Car of the Year. The Alpheon’s sculpting design flows in all directions, giving the vehicle a tightly wrapped appearance and a fast, coupe-like profile.
Its dynamic and elegant body styling is highlighted by sharp side lines, short overhangs and fenders wrapped precisely around large wheel housings, giving it the presence of an upscale large sedan (2,837-mm wheelbase and 4,995mm body length).

Zagato is unveiling a batch of classic racing cars to celebrate its long term links with Alfa Romeo. The new race cars will be a modern interpretation of the classic Alfa TZ and TZ2 racing cars of the 1960s.
The cutting edge TZ3 is designed to minimize weight yet use the most powerful drive-train possible, so the 1960s aluminum tubular frame has been replaced by a carbon fiber monocoque with hand-crafted aluminum panels and in place of the original four cylinder engine is an 8C Competizone 4.2 liter V8. The final equation is 420 bhp pushing a curb weight of 850 kg for a 0-100 kmh in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 300 kmh.
The new TZ3 was built to a commission by German Zagato collector Martin Kapp, who owns original TZ and TZ2 cars. To honour the original car it uses the same shade of red and carries the same Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio Verde badging.
The Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa was officially unveiled at the 2010 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este where it received the Design Award for the best concept car or prototype chosen by public vote.
