A New GM Switches Gears

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Car News, General Motors

After a landmark government bailout, General Motors has emerged from bankruptcy on a mission to win back American car buyers. In an effort to change their corporate culture and re-focus on customers and cars, the revamped automaker is asking to “Tell Fritz.”

The new campaign allows people to go online and send their comments to company executives, express their views and give input on the direction of the new GM. In addition, executives, including CEO Fritz Henderson, recently invited to meet them and drive all of the latest models at the company’s Michigan Proving Grounds.

And the new commitment to customers may be paying off. The company recently announced they would be building 60,000 more vehicles this year than originally planned, and have recalled over a thousand previously laid off workers to help build them.

2010 Ford Mustang, Your Way

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Car News, Ford, Motoring News

The 2010 – America’s favorite muscle car for 45 years straight – is ready to be customized. In fact, as one of the most ever, Ford is making it easier for pony to create the virtual Mustang of their dreams. With never-before-used digital technologies, Ford has created a customizer site within the car’s at www.fordvehicles.com/the2010mustang. The site’s design is meant to reflect what the is all about: a classic design and a hard attitude, coming together to create a revolutionary automobile.

One week after launch, almost 52,000 cars have been built with more than 16,000 of those saved into the site gallery. And more than 30 forums and blogs are sharing their own creations – all without a single dime put toward advertising.

The Mustang customizer site is not only fun, but it’s also simple to use. Choosing parts, changing colors, determining the intensity of your burnout cloud – all of these interactions are designed to be fluid and easy. There are 239 assets in the customizer, and visitors can even choose the decals and the environments for their Mustang. Accessories available include wheels, decklids, spoilers and grilles. Within minutes, 10 vastly different looks can be created and saved as desktop wallpaper.

There are countless customizer sites out there, but the 2010 customizer sets itself apart, largely because it’s not designed to be a linear build and price experience, like most such sites are. Working with Wunderman/Team Detroit and Firstborn, Ford focused on bringing some fun back into dreaming up the ultimate Mustang.

Firstborn created a car customizer that would resonate with the target audience. A community customizer section is instrumental in doing just that. This multiuser mode lets four people work on the same Mustang in real time. Chat features create an even more social experience, and the gallery allows submitted Mustangs to be voted on by other users, with the winners displayed each week. Firstborn built the customizer section to facilitate multiple users in the same place, all customizing at the same time – thereby allowing users to watch others building their custom Mustang.

For those serious about making their custom car a reality, a downloadable PDF offers a detailed list of all the parts used to create that particular Mustang. The PDF is separated into three categories – Ford, aftermarket and concept accessories – and includes links to the applicable sites. The list of parts makes it easy to start a conversation with your local Ford dealer.

Porsche Readies Most Dynamic 911 to Date; 2010 911 GT3 RS

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Car News, Motoring News

396thmDelivering even more engine power, lower weight and shorter transmission ratios, as well as upgraded body and suspension components than all previous GT3s, the new Porsche sets the foundation for homologating the race version of the 911 GT3 and will be introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show September 17-27, 2009.

The heart of the new, uncompromising GT3 RS is the power unit. Like the engine featured in the 911 GT3, the naturally-aspirated RS power unit now displaces 3.8 liters and delivers even more power, while revving up even faster to its 8500 rpm redline. It now delivers 450 horsepower, 15 more horsepower than its 911 GT3 counterpart. Even with a specific output of more than 118 hp per liter from the six-cylinder boxer engine, the power unit in the new GT3 RS remains fully suitable for everyday use.

The new comes exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox optimized for short gearshift travel, low weight and . To enhance the level of performance throughout the entire range of engine and road speed, the transmission comes with shorter ratios than found in the 911 GT3, deliberately conceding an even higher potential top .

Dynamic engine mounts are standard and serve to improve the car’s handling to an even higher level. Depending on driving conditions, the mounts change in their stiffness and damping effect, improving the connection between the engine and the body when driving under very lively conditions, yet allow for more comfortable conditions during everyday street use.

Porsche is also introducing another new option in 2010 for the GT3 RS, a lithium-ion battery. Delivered with the car and, when replacing the conventional lead-acid battery, it reduces the weight by more than 10 kg or 22 lb and is mainly intended for the track.

To further improve its sporting behavior, the new comes with a purpose-built and specially set up PASM suspension, a wider front and rear track and corresponding bodywork.

The front axle comes with nine-inch-wide wheels running on 245/35 ZR 19 sports tires while the rear axle features twelve-inch-wide wheels incorporating 325/30 ZR 19 sports tires.

The new shows its close connection to motorsport through its dynamic looks, in particular by its low ride height, the new, extra large carbon-fiber rear wing and titanium exhaust system.

The 2010 911 GT3 RS goes on sale in the U.S. in early spring of 2010 and will be priced at $132,800.

The new M interior promises to be pure Infiniti, highlighted by the use of innovative materials, an advanced climate control system, superior audio and an enhanced quality feel. Despite improved performance from the new engine lineup, fuel consumption will be reduced.

In addition, the 2011 M will continue Infiniti’s technology innovation leadership with a blind spot intervention system. This industry-first system is designed to help alert the driver if another vehicle is detected in an adjacent lane during an intended lane change, and then help assist the driver in returning the vehicle toward the center of the original lane of travel.

The 2011 Infiniti M, which is scheduled to go on sale across the world starting from spring 2010, was revealed through a unique “video mapping” process — in which a “virtual M” was created on a 3D form. It is the world’s first “virtual only” (no physical vehicle) automotive application of this cutting-edge technology. The 2011 Infiniti M will make its official later this year.

MadAss 125 – Sachs Innovative New Motorcycle

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Motorcycles

Sachs MadAss 125While it’s true that every Sachs motorcycle and scooter is innovative by definition, it’s also true that in the history of Sachs Bikes this may be the most unique design ever released by the historic German company. The Sachs MadAss 125 is an urban light-weight motorcycle designed to rock the perception of what a motorcycle should look like and ride like.

The MadAss has an exclusive Sachs engineered frame design that is the whole key to how the bike handles so well. The banana swing arm, the rear mono shock, and main frame all run parallel to each other. This allows jolts from the rear wheel to be sent forward into the front suspension, and not up into the rider. Fuel is carried in the frame, and together you get an incredibly light and nimble machine weighing just 209 lbs. Other design features include twin 55 watt headlights, dual disc brakes, low profile tubeless tires on 16″ alloy rims, and 43 mm front forks.

The MadAss is being sold in the U.S. exclusively by Peirspeed Powersports Dealers. Bill Peirce, President of Peirspeed said, “The first shipment of 2010 Sachs MadAss 125’s are now available on dealer showrooms. We’re excited that the demand for the MadAss 125 has remained high ever since dealers started taking pre-orders a year ago. And despite tough economic times, dealers are reporting brisk sales.”

The 2010 Sachs MadAss 125 has been available in a small number of Peirspeed dealerships starting the first of August 2009. More Peirspeed dealers are expected to receive their first shipments within 60 days.

Cash for Clunkers Generates New Traffic

Posted by: Auto Buff  /  Category: Car News

After months of declining car sales and closing dealerships, the auto industry may be getting a second wind. With the success of “Cash for Clunkers”, car sales are on the rise.

Officially known as the Car Allowance Rebate System, the program rewards people for turning in older gas guzzlers for new, more fuel efficient vehicles. Americans across the country can get a $3,500 to $4,500 voucher to replace their clunker. The exact credit depends on how much more fuel efficient the new vehicle is.

Editors at Edmunds.com have been flooded with questions from readers about who and what qualifies for the program. And despite a number of rules and regulations, experts say “Cash for Clunkers” has been the most successful of all the government stimulus plans this year.
